In-Depth Information
DANGDANG
Dangdang ( www.dangdang.com ) works like Amazon and JD.com and has a strong focus on
books. Some locals argue it's cheaper than other sites, but it pays to compare all three sites.
Cash on delivery is also available.
LEFENG AND STRAWBERRYNET
Lefeng ( www.lefeng.com ) is the place for all things cosmetic. Locals love it, but some
product ranges are still limited by what is better suited to the Asian complexion. Straw-
berrynet ( www.strawberrynet.com ) can be a savior and is also linked to Zhifubao. To pay
with Zhifubao, however, you will need to use Strawberrynet via the Chinese-language op-
tion, not English.
HUIHUI
Most of the online shops cross over in what they sell, so it can be a nightmare trying to
shop around for the best price. Download the Huihui add-on ( http://zhushou.huihui.cn ) and
it will help you find the best prices for a product in a single search. It works for all major
browsers—just click on the blue

FLIGHTS
The two major flight websites in China for domestic and international flights are
www.ctrip.com and www.elong.com . They are both English friendly and have good cus-
tomer service. Both accept international credit cards and international Paypal payments, as
well as domestic cards and Zhifubao. Ctrip has the advantage of also accepting cash on de-
livery of tickets, as long as you'll be paying for them in the departure city.
Payment Systems
JIAOFEIYI MACHINES
This is perhaps your easiest option for all payments. Firstly, these incredibly handy ma-
chines are almost completely bilingual, so, unlike with virtually every other payment sys-
tem in the city, you may feel confident using them without your usual Chinese hand holder.
They accept any UnionPay card and can help you pay for almost anything—Zhifubao, elec-
tricity, Taobao, mobile or fixed line phone bills, road toll cards (ETC card), bank transfers,
and more. You can find them in supermarkets, such as Carrefour, Wu Mart, BHG, Bonjour,
and Walmart; the lobbies of banks; some shopping malls; and more. Just note that while
bank transfers under RMB5,000 transfer immediately, amounts over this figure can take up
