of the bar he was so excited and asked if she could advise him on how to fix a problem that
he'd had with the measurements in his own bar.
There seems to be no shortage of cases where employees have learned the ropes and
only months later opened their own version of the business. This isn't just a Chinese-ex-
pat situation. Chinese entrepreneurs also fall victim to highly observant staff. David Chan
of Dezan Shira & Associates advises people to learn how to protect their business, even
from their own employees. “Be wary of sharing too much know-how and giving one person
too much responsibility,” he says. “Give people different responsibilities so that one person
doesn't do everything.”
