TOP 10 TIPS FOR STAYING HEALTHY IN BEIJING
A long-term resident of Beijing, Dr. Richard Saint Cyr of Beijing United Family
Hospital (BJU) and website MyHealth Beijing has shared his top 10 tips to help you
stay healthy while living in the big smoke.
TIP 1: RESPECT THE AIR POLLUTION, BUT DON'T BE CONTROLLED BY IT
Beijing has some of the worst pollution in the world, and even healthy people may
still have problems on really bad days. You need to acknowledge and to respect this
issue. Wear a mask while cycling if the pollution index is over 200. But also, keep
some perspective and try not to get too caught up in worrying about pollution.
TIP 2: TAKE CONTROL OF INDOOR AIR
Ninety percent of our time is spent indoors, and air quality indoors can often be just
as bad or worse than outdoors. Protect that 90 percent of your Beijing time with well-
made air purifiers, special air-scrubbing plants, and proper ventilation.
TIP 3: DON'T WORRY ABOUT THE CLINICS; THE CARE IS VERY GOOD
Beijing expats are really lucky in that there are excellent clinics that can easily take
care of almost all medical needs.
TIP 4: BUY ORGANIC FOOD—OR GREENFOOD LABEL
Here in Beijing, food safety is a major concern, and organic food in general has (in
theory) much more government oversight than a standard local farm. Alternatively,
government-certified foods with the GreenFood label are made with fewer pesticides
and chemicals than regular produce. They're not as good as organic but they're better
than nothing, and the prices are a bit cheaper than organic.
TIP 5: BUY A BIKE
The exercise value of riding a bike is crucial, and biking in Beijing's pollution is still
healthier than not exercising at all. As for helmets, though it's rare to see them worn,
they're still a lifesaver, and your children should definitely wear them as much as
possible.
