MATERNITY AND GIVING BIRTH
Aside from returning home, there are three basic options if you do decide to bring your child
into the world in China's capital. There are the international hospitals, the private Chinese
ob-gyn hospitals, and the local hospitals, again in either the general ward area or VIP/in-
ternational section. If you give birth in one of the major international hospitals, then you
probably won't notice much difference between the procedures you'd expect at home and
what you'll experience here.
Local hospitals, however, may offer an experience that falls far short of your notion of
an idyllic birth. Like many areas in Beijing life, the notion of customer service or customer
experience is either not a consideration or just in its nascent form. When it comes to mater-
nity, there is no exception. The private facilities differ dramatically from the public options,
but, compared to what you might expect of a Western service, they still lack a few bells and
whistles. On the flip side, as you can guess, staff at Chinese facilities are extraordinarily
experienced.
