Unfortunately, one of the factors that may hinder China's rise in the global university
ranking system is the fact that the relationship between the government and the universities
is extremely tight. Not only are academic appointments often influenced by connections
rather than academic excellence, but funding is also often dependent the exam results of its
students. This means that teachers are often pressured to pass students, even if they never
turn up to class. So, not only can results be falsely inflated, but if you're serious about really
immersing yourself in education, you might find that you're surrounded by and involved
in group assignments with students who couldn't give a hoot about studying. The fanatical
study habits that got them into university don't necessarily hang around after Orientation
Day. Also, because of the university admission system and a culture that prioritizes mon-
etary gain over personal passion or interest, a shockingly high proportion of students are
enrolled in majors that they have no personal interest in.
Aside from majors that directly relate to Chinese language or culture, another problem
with doing an undergraduate or postgraduate degree at a Chinese university is that it's not
