there's a chance that the school you want might not have an immediate vacancy.
The international schools provide children with varying depths of experience of the
local Chinese culture. Some schools, such as Yew Chung International School (YCIS), cre-
ate bilingual learning environments; government-run international schools, such as Beijing
World Youth Academy (BWYA), enroll both local Chinese students and foreign students;
most schools include Chinese language as a compulsory part of their curriculum; and some
schools compete with local schools in interschool sports competitions.

Trying to find a school that's close to your office shouldn't be too much of an issue if
your child is little. International playgroups, preschools, and kindergartens can be found in
nearly all the expat hot spots around the city. Many are even located in or beside apart-
ment compounds, such as Etonkids International Kindergarten and Ivy Academy. For the
older kids, the options are more limited in the inner city. Beijing City International School
(BCIS) near Shuangjing, the British School of Beijing's Sanliun campus (up to age 12), and
the Canadian International School of Beijing (CISB) Liangmaqiao campus are all within
easy reach of the CBD; there are also several around Lido, near the northeast corner of the
