identified. They will play performer roles (see
figure 3). The delegation links between actors
should be identified as well and represented for
example with an UML object diagram (not shown
here). In this step the hierarchical structure of the
organization within the business scope should be
retained to be used later in assigning role names
to actors.
The modeler will go through each functional tree
and identify for each functional element (detailed
process, sub-process or activity) its scheduling.
The scheduling of the processes must be summa-
rized in scenarios like those defined by Cockburn
(1998) (see next section for more details about
these scenarios). When dealing with a certain
process, the modeler should specify all succes-
sions and interactional links between elements
of the process. The modeler may find also some
constraints or some business rules applied on
specific elements of the process. These constraints
and rules should appear in their appropriate loca-
tion in the process. The internal structure of these
elements should also be summarized in scenarios
obtained from documents and manuals or after
interviews and simulations.
For example, the “student's guide” of the aca-
demic web application describes for the different
tasks that must be fulfilled by the student and
their deadline. When studying these documents,
scenarios can be extracted. Figure 7 presents an
example of these scenarios. When simulating the
application, we obtained another scenario that was
not exactly the same as the one described in the
“student's guide”.
Collecting Functional Information
In this step, each global process should be studied
to identify its components. If there is no available
documentation about functional structure, inter-
views with actors responsible of processes may
help to identify the different detailed processes,
their sub-processes and activities. A functional
tree for each global process should be constructed.
These trees highlight the business structure of the
enterprise as it is seen by its internal staff. As a
consequence, this structure may be incorrect and
improper. The restructuring and modeling phase
will take in charge the restructuring of the busi-
ness components.
