the Antarctic may prove much more difficult than the Arctic, despite
the absence of polar bears; he says it's even colder and windier down
there. And still to be faced are the murderous bandits of the DariƩn
Gap, the heat, the enormous distances . . . Have no fear, I'm not resting
on my laurels.
Still, this has been a great day. We're just 50 kilometres from Can-
ada. The terrain that we saw before the white-out was breathtaking, so
majestic. On Ward Hunt there's a mountain that resembles an Egyp-
tian pyramid: a perfect triangle. The mountains of nearby Ellesmere
Island are rugged and green. To think I'm seeing these sights from the
North Pole side: a view not many humans have enjoyed.
I continue to worry about someone falling through the ice into
the water, and at every water crossing my heart races, especially when
it's Jose's turn to go across. He insists on standing right on the edge and
filming, and the ice at those points is often only 10 centimetres thick.
When he puts his eye to the camera, he doesn't think about his footing
or surroundings, and this makes me extremely nervous. Until we are
safely on Canadian soil, I shall worry about this section of the run. I've
