Today we got started, flying out to the Barneo Ice Station in a Russian
Antonov 74 jet. Barneo Ice Station is the final gateway to the north for
explorers and adventurers like meā€”just 100 kilometres away from the
geographic North Pole. It opens in spring after Russian Hind helicopters
locate a flat, smooth, stable surface on the ice for the base, and engineers
build a runway that can accommodate supply and transport planes and
a camp. The ice station closes down at the end of April, and each year it
has to be rebuilt, thanks to the shifting ice flows at the top of the world.
