About 25 kilometres north of Río Gallegos, after I'd completed 60 kilo-
metres of my day's run, we were joined by some runners who wanted
to run the last section with me.
One of the runners was called Elvis. I noticed Elvis as I ran up to
the 60-kilometre mark because he was jumping around a lot and doing
some incredible contortions as warm-ups. As I suspected, Elvis took
off in the lead, and it was clear that he only knew one speed: flat-out. I
can't figure out why people do this, but it happens regularly. Running
alongside and having a chat is far more civilised.
Elvis definitely had me on the flats and the downhill. It wasn't
