I am in the Antarctic: it's time to face the music.
We flew out of Punta Arenas in a Russian-built Ilyushan Il-76
cargo plane piloted by a Russian crew. It's the perfect machine for
polar regions: it has plenty of cargo room—it can even it vehicles on
board—and the power for short take-offs. The pilot came down to my
seat and introduced himself, then said, 'Welcome, Mr Patrick, to my
plane. I would be honoured if you and I could have a photo.' I grabbed
Ming, our cameraman, and the two of us went up to the cockpit to
check out the view from there.
