In-Depth Information
some days I str uggl e; oth ers a re a breez e.
my body knows it's done nearly 17,500 kilometres and, with roughly
4000 to go, the run is nearing its end, and so it is shutting down and
wanting to stop running. This means I have to work my mind over-
time, having it impress on my legs and heart that, yes, we've come a
long way, but there is still a lot of serious business to be done, keeping
up my 90 kilometres a day until it's time to fly to Antarctica, and then
running across the ice to the South Pole. The old body could use some
physio. I have had only five sessions since the beginning of the run,
and the last one was in Colombia, thousands of kilometres ago. Per-
haps I can find a masseur to stretch me and loosen my back and legs
before flying out to the ice. If I can, it will help to open up my running
gait and speed me up.
I left the desert behind two and a half days ago and am pass-
ing along the west coast through populated areas now. The roads are
increasingly clogged with people and vehicles as I get closer to Santi-
ago. The weather has changed a bit. The last couple of days have been
overcast and cool. Stupidly, I was lulled into a false sense of security
and I ran all day yesterday without my protective hat and sunglasses.
