now that I'll have to backtrack to Chile or Argentina after I reach the
South Pole, but I've been in touch with the Red Cross and I'm going to
make the last eight days of the run a big media event, get all the news-
papers, radio and TV stations to cover the dying days of Pole to Pole.
Full speed ahead for Santiago, and Brooke and Dillon, who will arrive
there on December 10.

Last night we camped 2 kilometres from a mountain pass. Just before
dawn I got up, had a snack and lots of water, and ran. After I hit the top
of the mountain, there was a big and beautiful 42-kilometre downhill
stretch. I felt like I had wings. For the first time in a while, I was exhila-
rated by running.
It has been one of those freakish days when everything goes right.
When I started running, in the dark at five o'clock, I looked up and
there in the sky was the Southern Cross. It was the first time I'd seen
it since I left Australia. I felt suddenly close to home and got a little
