ing my hair washed and cut. I told the hairdresser about Pole to Pole
while she was snipping away, and when I tried to pay her at the end
she refused to take my money and insisted I accept her gift of a Chile
national soccer team T-shirt. Just another instance of kindness on the
road.
I am running nearly 130,000 steps per day every day to complete
the 90 kilometres per day goal that I set myself after leaving the Darién
Gap. My stride has shortened from 1 metre to around 70 centimetres.

There have been many close shaves on this run: I could easily have
died in the Arctic ice; there was the time when Bernie and I narrowly
missed death when the out-of-control truck literally flew past our
heads; and there were the bandits, flash floods and predators of the
Darién. In the past two days, though, I have come closer to dying than
I have at any other point. What nearly claimed my life and that of my
the inho spita ble d eser t, wh ere d eath await s the foolh ardy .
