Lots of nothingness . . . just like in the movie The NeverEnding Story ,
when the boy loses his ability to dream. I have been angry at the world
but I need to get angry at me, so I tell myself, 'Shut up, Pat. Put your
head down; do what you came here to do. Be content with what you're
doing. This is what you do. So befriend the road and do it.'
To put you in the picture, below is recent email correspondence
between Bernie and my South Pole guide, Eric Philips. I asked Bernie
to beseech Eric to try to organise a later flight from Punta Arenas to the
Antarctic. I've picked up a lot of time, but I still think making it to Punta
Arenas by December 29 is beyond me. If only the plane could leave
later, allowing me to finish the South American leg, and then fly me
out of the South Pole a week or so later than planned, I wouldn't have
to consider flying to Punta Arenas from wherever I am in Chile, then
backtracking after the South Pole to continue running from where I
left off. You'll see how my hopes have been dashed.

Hi Eric,
Just a quick update on our progress through Chile. It appears
that we will be in Santiago on 10 December.
We are still hopeful that we may be able to pull back
more time by going on off-road trails and alternative roads if
the opportunity arises. We pulled back three days in Peru and
are looking for opportunities here. Eric, ideally we would like
to finish this event at the South Pole and not have to return to
Argentina for a further week. What are the chances if required
that you and the cameraman fly on 29 and if required [the Ant-
arctic organisers] ALE find Pat a seat one week later? I ask this
as a contingency as I want to ensure after coming this far that
we don't fall at the last hurdle. Would it be okay for me to speak
to ALE regarding this, or would you prefer to ask them on my
behalf?
Kind regards,
Bernie
