It's said that runners get a second wind in a race, but when the race
goes for 21,000 kilometres it's a hell of a second wind that's needed.
Every day I have so many ups and downs, but one thing that keeps me
going is this belief in the second wind, the belief that, no matter how
tired and sore I get, if I push through it I'll recover and be able to run
even more strongly.
We've booked Brooke and Dillon's flights. They'll be flying out in
December when school finishes, and will link up with me, wherever I
am on the road, and stay with me until I fly to the Antarctic.
In Lima, as well as attending the meeting with Greg, I have to go
to a function that the Australian embassy has organised for me. The
Australian ambassador to Peru, John Woods, has invited prominent
Australians living and working in Peru to come and say g'day and hear
about my quest. I'm looking forward to it, but I'm hoping it will be
brief.

I did another live cross to Karl Stefanovic on the Today show today,
standing in the most godforsaken placeā€”the desert of northern Peru.
My battered lips were smothered in zinc; seeing that must have been
a treat for all the viewers back home. And if they weren't grossed out
by my lips, I'll bet they were when I showed them the footage of me
having my infected toe lanced. I'm 300 kilometres north of Lima. All
around me are small, windswept, pointed hills, with sand blasting
every where. It's hot . The sky is white. Karl reckoned it looked like I was
standing on the surface of Mars.
To date, we've destroyed 12 tyres on the Winnebagos. The tyres
explode on the hot roads. Conditions are very hard on anything that
slaps the surface of the planet in this part of the world. Karl and his
co-host Lisa Wilkinson were gobsmacked when I told them that I was
planning to increase my distance from 85 or 90 kilometres a day to
95 kilometres and, who knows, maybe to 100 kilometres. I explained
to them that the 5 or 10 extra kilometres a day mean that I have to
work much harder in the day and get less sleep at night, but that
the increased distance is crucial to me getting on that flight to the
