I crossed into Ecuador a couple of days ago and have been running
steadily south towards Quito, the capital. Another late finish tonight,
after eleven o'clockâa fitting end to a shitty couple of days. Two days
ago, Bernie was driving the Winnebago when an oncoming truck
veered into his lane, causing him to swerve, and he wiped out a sec-
tion of his undercarriage on the gutter. The vehicle was still drivable,
but last night when he went on ahead to scout for somewhere for us
to buy food for dinner, he was behind a truck going down a steep hill
