So, in Australia, Bernie approached the Red Cross and people
such as Dick Smith to try to organise a mid-February departure from
the South Pole. He's waiting to hear if his pleas have been successful.
There may be extra flights to the Antarctic this year, because December
2011 marks the centenary of the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen
and his party becoming the first men to reach the South Pole, and a
month later comes the centenary of the great British explorer Robert
Falcon Scott reaching the pole; sadly, of course, he then perished with
his party on the Ross Ice Shelf on March 29, 1912.
Meanwhile, all I can do is assume that the original deadline
remains in place and bump up my distances. I have no idea what the
rest of the road in South America will hold for me. Up ahead, there
are mountains, and the high altitude there can play havoc with a run-
ner. In Chile and Argentina there are mudslides that can obliterate a
road in a flash, which will mean a detour that might take me many
kilometres away from my route, and Argentina also has a bewildering
and ever-changing road system. We won't know what conditions will
be until we are on the spot. I am paying the price for all those media
