I entered Nicaragua and ran down the west coast's wide, fertile plains—
ash from the volcanoes in the region makes for good soil—alongside
beautiful wide lakes that are home to the world's only freshwater
sharks. Beauty, however, is only skin deep: it didn't take long for reality
to set in. The poverty in the republic of Nicaragua, the largest Central
American country, with a population of 6 million, is the worst I have
ever seen. Nearly half the population lives below the poverty line, and,
with a basic staple diet of corn, rice and beans, nearly 30 per cent of
