the last week of their school term so they can join me before I enter the
Darién Gap, with Juan the cameraman and whatever security Greg can
organise for me. He's scrambling to find some right now. It's important

Today, as I ran my last day in Guatemala, rivers flowed all around me,
bringing life to the many village communities and coursing on into
the sea. The people have little but hold their heads high. It occurred
to me that they are as proud of the bananas, pineapples and melons
that they grow in the fields around their wooden shanties and sell
from makeshift roadside stalls as people in the first world are of their
million-dollar homes and expensive cars.
The weather today was typical of what we've experienced in Gua-
temala, changing rapidly from hot sunshine to driving rain. I have
made it through unscathed, and I haven't needed medical attention—
a miracle, really, considering the drivers' demolition derby.
