I'm afraid I can't take such honours all that seriously. I just couldn't
help it: I broke up. 'Hmmm,' I said. 'Pat Farmer Day. That's interesting!
I want everyone in Australia to know how important I am—so impor-
tant that I've been given a whole day to myself here in Houston, and
that I expect the same thing when I get home to Sydney.' You'd think
someone so special would get the afternoon off, but no such luck. The
plaque went into the van and off I ran. I still had 20 kilometres to do to
finish my day's distance.

The temperature was well into the 40s, and to demonstrate how hot
the road was I put a frying pan on the bitumen and in a minute it was
hot enough to fry an egg, which is exactly what I did. I cracked the egg,
dropped it into the pan; immediately, it sizzled and cooked through.
It was delicious.
I've met a nice guy, a Houston councillor named Steve Costello,
an iron man and marathon runner. He invited us to dinner at his home
