those names to go right here'—she pointed to my heart—'and when
you don't have the band, or the people around, I want our names to
give you strength because all of us have been affected by Katrina. We've
lost homes, we've lost family, we've lost friends, and for the last six years
we have been working to rebuild our community. I want you to hear
these names.' And one by one the staff members called out: Sheila
Spring . . . Thomas North . . . Darlene Embury . . . Al Hamilton . . . Bucky
Sanchez . . . Joyce Bruce. And then everyone recommenced dancing in
the street, to 'When the Saints Go Marching In'.
As I set off again, Kay called out to me, 'South Pole, here we come!
We're going to run a little way with you, Pat!' And they did just that.
As we were running, Kay said to me, 'What an amazing opportunity
to run with you and get to know a little of the man behind the reputa-
tion . . . You have taught us, we who thought we had been taught lots
of things, the value of heart, and that heart stretches across oceans. So
