they raise and pour into projects. The Red Cross has a text number that
people can call to make a donation. Apparently, there's some govern-
ment red tape in Australia that doesn't allow such a facility. But this run
is about providing much-needed money to desperate people. Surely
the law can be changed to make that happen more effectively? There
has been little coverage of my run at home, and that breaks my heart.
All day as I run, I rack my brain to devise ways to raise my journey's
profile. Maybe there will be more response in Australia when I hit
South America and the South Pole. I can only hope.

In North Carolina, I took on the notorious Fat Boy Burger . . .
and came off second best. At Mac's Speed Shop—a beer, burger
and bike hangout where we stopped for refreshments at Northend,
just south of Charlotte—the Fat Boy is the specialty of the house.
