After I'd completed the 15 kilometres I stopped and returned to
bed for an hour's sleep before setting off again, well before the sun
rose. By tonight, I will have run 100 kilometres in one day. I know this is
too much—100 kilometres is much too far for a single day—but I can't
afford to slacken.
June 30
I did three TV interviews today in Charlotte. At every one, I was asked
why an Australian was running through the United States to raise
money for the Red Cross. I replied that I am a citizen of the world and
that suffering is universal. Americans get it. Like we do in Australia,
they have to cope with savage weather, fires and floods. I am continu-
ally struck by the people I meet who thank me for going to their town.
I tell them that it's my privilege.
