They're here! Today, on a lonely rural road in south Virginia, after three
months, came the moment I've dreamed of, my reunion with Brooke
and Dillon. They'll be with me for the next three weeks, until it's time
for them to return to school in Australia. Katie drove back to Washing-
ton DC and picked them up at the airport. They'd been held up for a
day due to missed connections and lost luggage, and were dead tired.
They saw me from the car, a tiny speck on the road in the distance. They
approached slowly and quietly to take me by surprise. Then, at last, I
sensed someone close behind me and turned, and there they were.
My children piled out and swamped me in one of our big Farmer
family group hugs. There were tears, and everyone tried to talk at once.
Brooke told me she couldn't believe how skinny and tanned I am. I put
my hands on her cheeks and looked at her to see how much she had
changed in the six months since I've seen her. She's had her braces
taken off her teeth, and now her ears are pierced. She looks pretty good
to me. Brooke was still emotional an hour after the rendezvous.
