barns, streams, cattle and palatial homes festooned in US flags and
yellow ribbons to honour the soldiers in Afghanistan, I kept thinking
about the bloke in the Halfway House restaurant in Shoreham who
remarked that if the dream is big enough the facts don't matter. My
family, my team and my close supporters have been the only people
who have believed from the start that I can do this. To all those who are
so logical about it, my dream to run from pole to pole is impossible to
realise. I believe that if I can dream something, I can make it happen.
We live in a technological age in which if something doesn't compute
many think it can't happen. They said the early explorers wouldn't
realise their dreams—Magellan and Columbus and Cook. The naysay-
ers don't live free, don't think free; they don't challenge the accepted
norm. If I can inspire others to push their boundaries, that will be one
more benefit of this run. Dream it; do it.
Every single thing I ever wanted I've had. I fell in love with Lisa
and wanted to marry her and I did, and our life was wonderful right
up to the moment when she passed away. I wanted kids, and I have
Brooke and Dillon. I wanted to be an ultrarunner, and I became one.
