June 10
Today was a difficult day. After the hot sunshine of the last two days,
I found myself running most of the day in torrential rain. I asked the
crew to go ahead and try to find a hot cup of coffee and something
sustaining to eat. In Shoreham, they found the Halfway House restau-
rant, a cosy diner, the kind you see in rural American movies, which
was fine, because we were in rural America. As I came to a halt out-
side, I took off my wet weather gear, my wet shoes and socks, and went
in . . . to the cheers of the diners. One bloke came up, shook my hand
and told me I was his new hero. They gave me hot coffee and a huge
slice of blueberry pie, baked fresh that morning, with a big scoop of
run ning thro ugh t he do wnpo ur.
