I saw a tree snake on the road today. The little fella was in grave danger
of being squished by the trucks and cars whizzing by. I stopped, picked
him up and placed him safely in undergrowth at the side of the road.

I did an interview via satellite phone with Chris Smith on Sydney's
Radio 2GB, bringing listeners up to date on the past few weeks. It was
good to hear his broad Aussie accent. Chris introduced me on air as a
masochist, and I didn't disagree.
We are at a town called Val-d'Or, and have covered nearly
1000 kilometres since Radisson. The biggest problem today has been
the flies that hatch in huge numbers at this time of year dive-bombing
me as I run. Otherwise, I'm feeling good. My legs are loosening up, and
I'm back in my stride. It goes without saying that running on bitumen
is a whole lot easier than on ice, and my diet now is steak, pasta and
salmon fishcakes, which beat plastic-tasting dehydrated food hands
down. Not a night passes when I don't thank God that I'm no longer
