In-Depth Information
Truth be told, the state has—egads!—slipped to second place behind Washington, DC
(of all places), in per capita consumption, but Korbel still sells just under half its brandy in
the state!
Wisconsinites are decidedly not connoisseurs of brandy; you'll never hear discussions
of “smoky” versus “plump” varieties, or vintages. Try to chat somebody up about cognac
versus brandy in a bar and you'll probably just be met with an empty stare. (For the record,
cognacisaspiritdistilledfromthewhitewinegrapesofCognacinFrance;brandyisamore
general term for a spirit distilled from wine.)
Here's how to make Wisconsin's fave drink: Put ice cubes in a glass. Add two ounces
of brandy (any kind you wish), one lump of sugar, and one dash of cocktail bitters. Fill re-
maining glass with water or white soda. Top off with fruit or mushrooms.
In 2013, two Wisconsin friends had a brilliant idea: Brandy old-fashioned in a bottle.
They're now marketing six packs of the drink. Sheer genius.
