Since 1990, the state has had one of the country's fastest-growing per capita income
levels, topping $27,000. It's been one of the top 10 nationally for fastest-growing econom-
ies. This is tempered somewhat by the state's high income tax.

equipment. The paper product industry has been number one in the nation since 1953, ac-
counting for 12 percent of the national total, to the tune of $12.4 billion. One of every 11
jobs in the state is tied to paper. (However, being tied to an industry experts call dying is
not perhaps the best method to ensure future stability.)
