Downtown in the Jefferson Street Inn the M City Grill (203 Jefferson St., 715/848-2900,

temporary American fare has been raved about by more than one reader (and citizens of
Wausau in the local papers). It has a comfortably chic atmosphere.
Ah, the Wagon Wheel (3901 N. 6th St., 715/675-2263, 5pm-9pm Mon.-Sat.,
$12-50)—it's a seven-decades-old local rustic eatery famed for dry-aged steaks, barbecue
ribs,andadrippingbutterballtenderloin(morethanthreeinchesthick);therearealsobison
and New Zealand venison. Wine Spectator has favorably acknowledged its wine cellar. Ex-
pect homemade everything and a funky, very unpretentious vibe.

huge place at exit 185 of I-39/U.S. 51.
The local daily is the decent Wausau Daily Herald; City Pages is a thin but intelligently

By Air
The Wausau area is served by the Central Wisconsin Airport (715/693-2147, www.fly-
cwa.org ) in nearby Mosinee.
By Car
Getting to Wausau from Stevens Point (via I-39, 34 miles) takes 40 minutes. From Eau
Claire (via WI 29, 102 miles), it takes one hour and 45 minutes. From Minocqua (via US
51, 68 miles), it takes 70 minutes. From Green Bay (via WI 20, 97 miles), it takes one hour
and 40 minutes.
By Bus
Lamers bus line (800/261-6600, www.lamers.com ) runs between Wausau (depot: 2514
Trailwood Ln.) and Milwaukee, with stops in Stevens Point, New London, Appleton,
Oshkosh, and Fond du Lac.
