There's already a Wisconsin Rapids to the south, but the name might be more appropriate
forWausau,comprisedoffourcommunitiesstretchedalongasegmentofroaringWisconsin
River cascades (soincessantly punishingtheyweredubbedbyearlyvoyageurs, Gros Taur-
eau, or “Big Bull Falls”).
New plank roads allowed the exploitation of the area's staggering wood supply. Within
a decade, there was one sawmill forevery 100residents ofthe city,which was soonrefitted
with the Native American name Wausau (“Far Away Place”).
