Marshield Clinic and New Visions Gallery
Not a tour spot per se, Marshfield Clinic does sport some impressive credentials. One of
the leading private group practice medical facilities in the United States, with 21 regional
Wisconsin satellites (and 5,000 employees), the Marshfield Clinic began in 1916 as a ded-
icated group of six physicians trying to give the rural communities a higher standard of
medical care. It now comprises three massive facilities—Marshfield Clinic, Saint Joseph's
Hospital (19,000 patients per year), and the Marshfield Medical Research Foundation, a
consortium of more than 100 research projects.
Adjacent to the clinic, in a space it donated, New Visions Gallery (1000 N. Oak Ave.,
715/387-5562, 9am-5:30pm Mon.-Fri., free) is an educational gallery; permanent holdings
include Marc Chagall prints, West African sculpture and masks, Australian aboriginal arts,
Haitian painting, and world folk arts. Temporary exhibits change every few weeks. St.
Joseph's Hospital also has a corridor of Wisconsin artists—about 50 are displayed.
