The coolest spot in Baraboo is Circus World Museum.
Thecentersponsorsaspringsandhillcranevolunteercount,thelargestsuchendeavorin
thecountry.Wisconsin,aMississippiFlywayhotspot,holdsalmost13,500sandhillcranes,
with more than 1,000 in Marquette County alone. Quite a change from six decades ago,
whensportandcommercialhuntersandpredatoryagriculturalexpansionhadparedsandhill
numbers to two digits.
Other Sights and Recreation
ModeledonEuropeanoperahouses,inparticulartheGreatOperaHallatthePalaceofVer-
sailles, the Al Ringling Theatre (136 4th Ave., 608/356-8844) is a fetching local gem of
architecture. Tours ($5) are given in summer by appointment (or if someone is around) or
just show up for one of the movies or live music events held regularly. A multimillion-dol-
lar renovation really brought back the resplendence.
In nearby North Freedom is another favorite—the chugging iron roosters at Mid-
Continent Railway and Museum (608/522-4261, museum 9:30am-5pm mid-May-Labor
Day and weekends through Oct., free), west of Baraboo on WI 136 and Highway PF. The
last operating steam engine of the Chicago and North Western Railroad is the granddaddy
