Under $50
Good luck. Not to be flip, but June-August, be glad you find anything near $50. That said,
show up Monday-Thursday and the Dells do have some $50-ish options, including the Twi
Lite Motel (111 Wisconsin Dells Pkwy. S, 608/253-1911, $49-60). Absolutely no frills but
it's a decent place with a pool and some room fridges. This is incredible pricing for this
area.
Camping is always an option. Public options are Mirror Lake and Rocky Arbor
State Parks. Mirror Lake is just south of Lake Delton along U.S. 12 and is the better
known—and thus more populated—of the two. Considering it's a large-capacity camp-
ground (145 sites), privacy is fairly decent. Rocky Arbor is closer to the Dells and not as
well known. For both, absolutely try to make reservations (888/947-2757, wisconsinstate-
parks.reserveamerica.com , $10 fee) as early as possible (say, 11 months ahead).
EighteenprivatecampgroundsareinandaroundtheDells.Comesummertime,theywill
be chock-full and boisterous—not an isolated, bucolic experience. A large popular opera-
tion is the Holiday Shores Campground (3900 River Rd., 608/254-2717, www.holiday-
shores.com , $30-55), a resort operation along the Wisconsin River with camping available
in a separate tenting area, along with a whole catalog of extras.
$50-100
Outstanding is the M Blackhawk Motel (720 Race St., 608/254-7770,
www.blackhawkmotel.com , $75), which literally no one dislikes. (And that's right, a motel
can be a top pick.) It's clean and reasonable, and the owners are friendly. Dollar for dollar,
it's tops around.
The Indian Trail Motel (1013 Broadway, 608/253-2641, www.indiantrailmotel.com ,
$75) is always a good budget option. A motel on 15 acres, it remains within walking
distance to downtown—for that, it created nature trails. All rooms have fridges and mi-
crowaves; amenities include a whirlpool and sauna, laundry, and restaurant.
One of the most classic B&Bs in the Midwest is the isolated Scandinavian-style
130-year-old farmhus, the M Thunder Valley Inn (W15344 Waubeek Rd., 608/254-4145,
