You'll see German everywhere in New Glarus.
For delectable Swiss-style baked goods, the M New Glarus Bakery (534 1st St., 608/
527-2916,7am-5pmTues.-Sat.,9am-4pmSun.,$2-6)istheonlystopnecessary.TheSwiss-
trained bakers turn out the house specialty,“Alpenbread,” but youmight also find stollen, a
dense, two-pound bread concoction of raisins, spices, marzipan, and almonds, often served
at the end of meals or as the centerpiece at brunches.
Along the main drag, Glarner Stube (518 1st St., 608/527-2216, lunch and dinner
Tues.-Sun., $13-22), on a restaurant site dating from 1901, specializes in fondue (cheese
cooked in wine), and Genschnitzelettes (tender veal sautéed in white wine sauce). This
place is immensely popular and no reservations are taken—so get there early, especially
since they close at 8pm Tuesday-Thursday.
M Deininger's (119 5th Ave., 608/527-2012, 11:30am-2pm Sat.-Mon., 4:30pm-9pm
Thurs.-Mon., shorter hours in winter, $10-22) was opened by an Alsace-trained chef
and his German wife, both groomed in Chicago eateries. An outstanding restaurant with
continental-Swiss-German heavy fare, it's standing-room only on weekends.
