Even better might be the stroll up, over, and through Mineral Point Hill and the Merry
Christmas Mine on a set of trails snaking up from the back of the parking lot. Miners took
80 years to get around to this side of the hill, firing up the lanterns about 1906 and mining
forsevenyearsinthelargestzincoperationinthearea.Assortedhulksofrustingequipment
and more than 100 abandoned crevice shafts dot the 43 acres. Native prairie restoration is
ongoing, and big bluestem is already blooming again.
Guided tours led by garbed docents depart regularly (schedule varies); last tickets sales
are at 4pm.
Up Shake Rag Street from Pendarvis you can espy other stone and stone-and-log dwell-
ings originally put up in the 1830s by Cornish potters, weavers, and other artisans (even
