In-Depth Information
beach at Governor Dodge State Park
Take a free gander at the residue of Dodgeville's lead-mining days; the first slag fur-
nace sits along East Spring Street, next to the lumber yard. Extra lead was extracted from
molten waste rock, and according to period reports the glow could be seen for miles.
The Greek revival limestone courthouse, the oldest in the state, is open to self-guided
walking tours during business hours.
Accommodations and Food
It would be nearly impossible to miss the regionally famous Don Q Inn (WIS 23 N, 608/
935-2321or800/666-7848, www.fantasuites.com ,$85-225),oneofWisconsin'smost“dis-
tinctive” lodging options. You can't miss the landmark C-97 Boeing Stratocruiser parked
out front. How about the trademarked “FantaSuites”? Jungle Safari and Sherwood Forest
are good examples. Some rooms are the real thing—the original, the Steeple, is an 1872
church steeple; the erstwhile Dodgeville Station of the Chicago and Northwestern Railway
now also houses several rooms. It's not new, but most still groove on it.
