spread out over 300 aces of farmland; sticklers for tradition are happy to find a cozy main
room with large fieldstone fireplace.
CAMPING
For the best camping head to Tower Hill State Park, where the sites are first-come, first-
served. Tenters in Spring Green also have
Wisconsin Riverside Resort
(S13220 Shifflet
Rd., 608/588-2826), offering canoe rentals, but little shade and at time rowdy campers.
Food
Classic road-food-quality eats, greasy eggs diners, hard-core Midwest supper clubs, and
wannabe chichi restaurants: Check!

Terrace
(lunch daily, dinner Tues.-Sat. May-Oct., $4-11). Heretofore the planet's only
Frank Lloyd Wright-designed restaurant, it was constructed out of a popular 1940s local
diner and a WWII aircraft carrier. Expect grand river views.

General Store
(137 S. Albany St., 608/588-7070, 9am-6pm Mon.-Fri.,
8am-6pm Sat., 8am-4pm Sun., $4-9) serves healthful yet creative lighter fare—absolutely
everything from scratch—keeping vegetarians squarely in mind. They have the best es-
presso, too, and are always on my itinerary.
Similarly refreshing is the

lunch only, from $5), a cafe/grocery that has divine sandwiches.
(They have Friday night trout dinners with 24-hour advance reservations; it's worth it.)
At
Freddie Valentine's Public House
(134 E. Jefferson St., 608/588-0220,

,
$11-20) the menu is heartland comfort food (mac 'n cheese),
some done differently (brat sliders), along with a few hints of world cuisine, all in the cozy
confines of the erstwhile local neoclassical-style bank.
