In-Depth Information
Frank Lloyd Wright's architecture is everywhere in Spring Green.
Then the wonderful alternative to everything-must-be-Wright: American Players
Theatre (608/588-2361, www.americanplayers.org ). APT has created a cult following of
sorts for its broad palette of offerings and for its accessible direction. Carved into a hill-
side, it's a personal fave: a steamy evening with nighthawks swooping and actors literally
crashingthroughtheunderbrush.(Althoughtheydohaveanewindoortheaterjustincase.)
Performances generally rotate Thursday-Sunday, with matinees weekends. The season runs
mid-June-early October. Tickets average $50.
In the mid-1800s, what is today Tower Hill State Park was the site of a major lead-
shot-production operation as cannonballs started to fly across the Mason-Dixon line, but it
went belly up in competition with farther-flung and cheaper facilities, all made possible by
the railroad. The old shot tower and smelter have been refurbished, and it's a cool (literally
and figuratively) traipse down into the cooling tank, where the lead pellets fell 180 feet to
the bottom, rounding and cooling as they went. Camping is available here on a first-come,
first-served basis.
