Natural Bridge State Park, one of the earliest human settlements in the Midwest

Baxter's Hollow, a 4,950-acre parcel of the extraordinary Baraboo Hills, itself a vast tract
of 144,000 acres and one of the last vestiges of contiguous upland hardwood forest in the
United States. So rich with flora and fauna are these regions that Baxter's Hollow has been
listed by The Nature Conservancy as one of the 75 Last Great Places in the Western Hemi-
sphere. Better, it has been cited as the state's second official Important Birding Area.
ThemosthumblingsiteincentralWisconsinisthe Black Hawk Unit oftheLowerWis-
consinStateRiverway.Theunitisofarchaeologicalnotefortherareandsomewhatmyster-
ious linear-type effigy mounds from the Late Woodland period (AD 600-1300), found only
in the quad states region including southwestern Wisconsin. Unfortunately, that splendid
andcryptichistoryisovershadowedbythemassacrethatoccurredalongthepark'snorthern
