Sauk Prairie is actually both Sauk City and Prairie du Sac. In the 1840s, Upper and Lower
Sauk were founded by Hungarian immigrant and dandy Agoston Haraszthy, before he lit
out for California to become the “Father of the California Wine Industry.” Sauk City man-
aged to one-up Prairie du Sac by incorporating first (becoming Wisconsin's oldest incor-
