Four miles south of Sauk City is the ever-inspiring Ferry Bluff, just off WIS 60. From the
bluff, the Baraboo Range is visible to the east, as is Blue Mound to the south. Many disem-
barkinSpringGreenforanextendedstay.NeartheLoneRockBoatlandingisaprotruding
cliff called Devil's Elbow for its hazardous navigation and numerous wrecks. The Avoca
Prairie, seven miles west of the WIS 133 Lone Rock bridge, is almost 1,000 acres of wet-
mezicprairie,thelargesttallgrass-prairie remnanteastoftheMississippiRiver.(Turnnorth
off WIS 133 onto Hay Lane Road, past Marsh Creek to the parking area; be very aware of
wetconditionsoryouwillgetstuck.)You'llpasstwoofthelastextanthand-operateddraw-
spanbridgesbuiltbytherailroadsbeforereachingBearCreek.AfterpassingRichlandCity,
Bogus Bluff comes into view, rich with apocryphal tales of subterranean riches, as well as
splendid views. Muscoda is the only town of any size before Boscobel, and to the west is
the Blue River Sand Barrens, a genuine desert—cacti, snakes, and a species of lizard all
live here.
