where Black Hawk surrendered. On the site of the second Fort Crawford, both Zachary
Taylor and Jefferson Davis spent military service time. The more intriguing segment of the
museum, “Medical Progress,” features Dr. William Beaumont's experiments on the human
digestive system (on an Acadian fur trader with an untreatable belly wound) in the 1830s,
in which he tied bits of food to surgical string to time the digestive process of the willing
patient—200 times. Among the results: the first recorded temperature of the human stom-
ach. The look at Mississippi clamming is fascinating.
The Old Rock School, on the edge of downtown, is considered the oldest surviving

Accommodations
South Marquette Road (WIS 60) has the greatest share of accommodations, most of them
chains.Oddlyenough,it'shardtogetvalueforthebuckhere.Extremelycheap Delta Motel
(1733 S. Marquette Rd., 608/326-4951, delta-motel.com , $40-90) has always been worth
the money.
An enormous step up in price but also quality is the AmericInn (130 S. Main St., 608/
326-7878, from $130), with a whole array of services, but quite honestly some of the most
solicitous service ever on the road.
