Granddad's Bluff, the must-see of must-sees in La Crosse
On the grounds at Riverside Park is the Riverside Museum (608/782-2366, 10am-4pm
daily in summer, $2), a local historical repository for La Crosse and Mississippi River his-
tory. Expect a bent for riverboats.
Scenic Drives
Start with the Mindoro Cut. The southern terminus of this road (Hwy 108) is northeast
of La Crosse in West Salem, and then it stretches up to Mindoro. A massive project when
undertaken around the turn of the 20th century, the road was literally shorn into a ridge
between the La Crosse and Black River Valleys. The cut was considered one of the most
ambitious hand-carved roads in the United States when it was finished in 1906. Even with
modern, leviathan earth-movers and assorted belching technology, doing this would be a
marvel.
In Mindoro, you must head for Top Dawgs (608/857-3077), home of—count 'em—108
hamburger choices.
Rustic Road 31 also starts in West Salem at the exit off I-90 at Highway C, running
through city streets and outskirt roads and passing the Hamlin Garland Homestead, a few
