St. Peter's Dome
istheaptlynamedsecond-highest
point in the state. On a clear day, three states are visible from the crown.
Morgan Falls
drops a frothy but tame 80 feet over onyx-colored granite. A trailhead leaves the parking
area at Penokee Overlook and then forks in opposite directions to the falls and the dome.
Stream crossings and rough stretches mark the way to St. Peter's Dome, so be forewarned.
Most popular with families, the
Day Lake Recreation Area
is now a 640-acre lake, but
once was marshland along the Chippewa River. A campground and short
nature trail
are
found here.
Northeast of Mellen a few miles, check out more grand northwest Wisconsin waterfalls
at
Copper Falls State Park
—great hiking as well.
Southwest of Mellen via Highway GG is a lovely backwoods drive. It wisps along the
Penokee Range past oodles of wildlife, including a chance to see Wisconsin's only
elk
herd.
