Basswood Island, as seen from the mainland
Rocky Island
Tadpole-shaped Rocky Island is well named for the cliff-walled shoreline on the southern
end. A smattering of extant structures from fish camps still lie in the weeds and along an
established trail. Twenty acres of the island are protected as the Rocky Island Cuspate Unit
Natural Area, juxtaposing beach dune and bog.
Rocky Island is a chip shot across the channel from South Twin Island, and the two are
one of the most popular pairs of islands in the archipelago, despite the fact that South Twin
already has a twin.
South Twin Island
In precise topographical contrast to Rocky Island, this sister-of-sorts sits across the narrow
channel. The least rocky island in the chain, it's mostly flat and sandy—and diminutive, a
mere 360 acres. Despite the lack of craggy belvederes or yawning sea caves, enough folks
still visit to warrant a visitors center next to the dock onthe west side, though “visitors cen-
ter” may be overstating it somewhat.
