Interstate State Park
is south ofthe “falls.” (Before youask, there are nofalls, at least not
since the construction of the dam.) Wisconsin's first state park, established in 1900, Inter-
state has perhaps the most magnificent examples of glacial topography outside of Devil's
Lake or Door County. Glacial runoff was so ferocious that it sluiced superb river gorges
right through the area's billion-year-old basaltic lava. The parks—one each in Minnesota
and Wisconsin—were formed in part to prevent Minneapolis opportunists from exploiting
