The northwestern reaches of the state have been dubbed Indianhead Country, ostensibly
because, on a map, the northern stretch of the St. Croix River and the Bayfield Peninsula
formtheimageofaNativeAmericanchiefgazingwestward.Thatmaybeabitofastretch,
but it does lend a touch of romanticism to the region.
Consider that within one chapter we're talking about Amish tours and muskie fishing
nearly simultaneously, it shows you that, honestly, enormous northwestern Wisconsin de-
fies any attempts to capture it in thumbnail sketches. Simply know this: within one grand
region, the northwest offers everything that the rest of the state can boast.
PLANNING YOUR TIME
One look at a map will help you forget about a do-it-all weekend. No problem, as Bayfield
(and the across-the-water Apostle Islands) is quite possibly the most perfectly realized
weekend getaway spot in the state.
Otherwise, the Chequamegon National Forest has some of the most isolated camping in
Wisconsin. Nothing beats camping out in the national forest for a weekend around Hay-
ward and fishing for the muskie that made it famous. You'll want to devote a week to trav-
