Canoeing
The canoeing is superlative in the flowage—as close to alone as you could hope to be. The
north fork of the Flambeau River is a 26-mile trip from the flowage to Park Falls; almost
two dozen rapids are transgressed en route.
The Bear River Trail is a 25-mile trip, reasonable for novices, that leaves southwest of
Lac du Flambeau on Flambeau Lake, with one easy rapid; eventually it joins with the Man-
itowish River and lolls into the town of Manitowish.
The heart of the flowage is traversed by two popular trails: the Manitowish Route and
the Turtle River Route.
It goes without saying that you should do your homework before sliding the canoe into
the water. Conditions and water levels vary, so check ahead.
Accommodations
ManysimpleNorthWoods-stylecabins,lodges,andresortslinethesouthwesternsectionof
the flowage, essentially trailing Highway FF from Butternut to Mercer. The places are no-
frills, precisely the way it's supposed to be. Included within is Deadhorse Lodge (4125 N.
Popko Circle West, 715/476-2521, www.deadhorselodge.com , $110-200 daily with three-
night minimum). Get past the name and check out the nine newer vacation cabins of all
sizes and varieties, some with whirlpools and fireplaces. Others have loved Flambeau
Vista Retreat (Park Falls, 715/762-4612, www.flambeauvista.com , from $140 with two-
night minimum), which has two multi-person cabins but weekly rentals only in summer.
For those who would rather rough it, more than a dozen established campsites are found
along the flowage, many on little islets dotting the reservoir—that's the best camping. The
eastern bulbous section of the Chequamegon National Forest is also right nearby. Contact
any of the area's chambers of commerce for specifics on regulations and precise loca-
tions—some of the sites are not easy to find. Sites are first-come, first-served.
Information
The Wisconsin DNR actually has little useful information. Better would be to contact the
chambers of commerce in Mercer (5150 N. U.S. 51, 715/476-2389, www.mercerwi.com ) ,
Hurley (316 Silver St., 715/561-4334, www.hurleywi.com ) and Park Falls (400 S. 4th
Ave., 715/762-2703 or 800/762-2709, www.parkfalls.com ) . Also try a compendium site:
